Prince Rama Varma – Carnatic vocalist and Vainika

On the 3rd episode of season 3, ‘Vistāra’, we speak to an Indian Classical Musician, Vainika, Musicologist, Teacher, Orator, Writer, Organizer, a direct descendant of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal and Raja Ravi Varma, a member of the Royal Family of Travancore, Sri Aswathi Thirunal Rama Varma, popularly known as Prince Rama Varma.

Prince Rama Varma was a disciple of Prof. Vechoor Hariharasubramania Iyer and Sangeethakalanidhi Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, and has also studied the Saraswathi Veena under Trivandrum R.Venkataraman and Sangeetha Kalanidhi Prof K. S. Narayanaswamy. As a visionary, he is known for spearheading the move to allow women inside the Navarathri Mandapam, both as performers and listeners, breaking more than three centuries of that tradition.
